MN State Fair Day in NYC
As all good Minnesotans know, the Minnesota State Fair begins in a little over a week. Our favorite annual 9-day event draws people from far and wide to celebrate agriculture, greasy food, the DFL booth, busts of dairy farmers’ daughters carved in enormous hunks of butter, and plenty of barnyard animals to go around, all in the middle of a major metropolitan area and my hometown, St. Paul, MN.
I am lucky enough to be traveling to MN for Labor Day weekend, so I’ll be hitting up the Fair with my family and attending “Prairie Home Companion” live in the Grandstand.
But not all New York dwellers are so lucky. And for you, we have an event only a Minnesotan could create – the Second Annual Minnesota State Fair Day in NYC on Sat, Aug. 22nd beginning at 1pm.
Laura Carter, creator of the event, and her Fair-loving crew have boiled it down (or should I say deep-fried it) to the Fair’s core element – the food – and have planned an exciting and delicious day.
Attendees, donning fanny packs, comfy walking shoes and sunscreen (unless you plan to compete in the “strangest sunburn contest”), will meet at Nathan’s Famous at 14th and 1st at 1:00pm August 22, and then work their way through the city. Intense research has been conducted to identify any and all Fair-related foods available in NYC, and the tentatively planned menu includes:
Nathan’s Famous (corn dog)
Pomme Frites (french fries)
Cafe Habana (corn on the cob)
Milk and Cookies Bakery (not even a close comparison to Sweet Martha’s)
A Salt and Bakery (Fried Mars bar)
42nd and 6th Ave (reported street fair, in hopes of mini donuts)
Famous Daves (Supporting the midwest)
They even created a map of possible locations, which also looks useful for future MN-related food adventures.
Laura has kindly extended the invitation to any and all who can truly appreciate a day such as this. RSVPs can be made to Laura directly at carter [dot] laurab [at] gmail [dot] com so she can plan accordingly. Also see the event invitation on facebook for all the deets.
So spend a glorious day remembering good times spent at the Great Minnesota Get Together by gorging yourself on food on sticks while wearing fanny packs.
Here are some pix of last year’s event.
Corn on the cob – definitely a personal fave!
Fanny packs – so practical! And even made stylish by MN ex-pat New Yorkers – notice the Gucci prints.
French fries – although not quite the same if they don’t come in a humongous yellow bucket
Cookies on a stick! This place is after a true Minnesotans heart! I wonder if they’ve been inspired by the MN State Fair…
Enjoy, and don’t forget your Tums!
