November Happy Hour Recap
Thanks to everyone who came out to last Friday’s Minnesota Monthly Happy Hour at (le) Poisson Rouge. The crowd was lively and everyone had a great time. There were a ton of great reconnections and new connections made. My personal highlight was that everyone who attended the very first happy hour back in early January was in attendance – Andrew Scott (who suggested the happy hour in the first place!), Hot Dish Mishka and her good friend Tera, and my old friends Kathryn and Nick. I only knew 2 of those 5 fine people last January but we became fast friends that night.
The other highlight for me was witnessing a few connections among attendees. I spoke to Dawn from Minneapolis who has lived in NYC for 10 years, and attended South High School back in Mpls. When my friend and vocal teacher Hans arrived, I introduced him to Dawn and they remembered each other from their school days. One group of newbies to the happy hour were from the St. Cloud area. When I met another woman from around St. Cloud, I introduced her to the others and they immediately found several people they had in common. That’s the thing about this happy hour – it makes the big city feel small in a familiar and homey kind of way. People come from far and wide (there was even a native Minnesotan now living in Ethiopia visiting Mishka and other friends in NYC), but find a bond over their Minnesota roots.
And the final highlight, which I am happy to say will likely be a monthly occurrence, is that our happy hour was immediately followed by an awesome DJ who spun 2 Prince songs and tons of 80’s pop and rock. He had us dancing in no time (drinking since 6pm didn’t hurt either). The DJ even played “Crush on You” by old-school Mpls R&B group The Jets within minutes of learning that we had a slew of Minnesotans in the house. Can’t wait for next month!
Speaking of next month, several happy hour attendees and I cooked up (or should I say baked up) a great idea for next month involving sweet treats. Stay tuned for details.
