Radio Happy Hour this Saturday with Craig Finn, Tad Kudler and Chuck Klosterman
This Saturday’s Radio Happy Hour at le Poisson Rouge has Minnesota written all over it! The guests this month are Craig Finn and Tad Kubler of The Hold Steady and author Chuck Klosterman. Craig and Tad previously rocked in Minneapolis band Lifter Puller back in the late 90’s. And Chuck was born in Hot Dish Mishka’s hometown of Breckenridge, MN.
Radio Happy Hour is a monthly live radio-style variety show with phenomenal guest stars, created by writer Sam Osterhout. Radio Happy Hour and LPR are extra nice by offering a great discount this month of $7 tickets when you enter code “MINNEAPPLE” (all caps) on the LPR website.
Sam writes and hosts each episode, and has gathered together some amazing talent (including past guests Norah Jones, Michael Showalter, Andrew WK and Tunde Adebimpe) and come up with some wacky murder-mystery stories for the past few months of this show. Back when he lived in Minneapolis in the early 2000s, Sam co-founded and wrote another version of a live radio show called Electric Arc Radio that was quite popular among Minneapolitans. Now living in NYC, Radio Happy Hour is an exciting take on the same theme.
I’ve been to 2 Radio Happy Hours since they kicked off in June, and both were ridiculously funny and entertaining – a quite enjoyable way to spend a Saturday afternoon. The story is absurd in a great way, with characters played by the guests, Sam, and actors Matt Skibiak and Robin Reed. There are sound-effects that become their own inside-joke throughout the show, and music by Stephanie Davila (aka Stardweller and another talented Minnesotan living in NYC). Sam does some q&a with the guests that brings out some of the real side of the guests – like a late-night talk show but kookier. And the guests will typically share their musical talent. Last month, Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio blew me away with his one-man, no-instrument band songs.
This month promises an interview with the band and Klosterman, two intimate performances by The Hold Steady, and Finn and Kubler starring in the murder mystery radio-play as two bickering brothers on family vacation with their step-father Chuck Klosterman. When they make a pit stop for drinks at a small town bar along the way, they get fingered for a murder they may or may not have committed.
