The New Standards this Friday

November 23, 2009
This Friday, Minneapolis band The New Standards are coming to (le) Poisson Rouge. This band’s got some serious Minneapolis history. Bassist John Munson was in Trip Shakespeare and Semisonic, and Chan Poling of the Suburbs is on piano, with Steve Roehm on vibraphone.
This jazz trio formed in 2005 and plays minimalist covers of, well, new standards. Their musical expertise shines as they reinterpret songs like “Watching the Detectives” and one of my personal all-time favorite songs “Bring It On Home to Me,” stripping them down to key notes and adding a jazz style that can make you forget it’s a cover.
Enjoy their show in your post-Thanksgiving hangover.
