This weekend – so many happenings

April 1, 2010

This weekend will offer many an opportunity to support and enjoy Minnesota-grown talent.

FRIDAY APRIL 2nd

First up, it’s that time again for Minnesota Monthly Happy Hour on Friday night at (Le) Poisson Rouge.  There a few treats in store this month.  First, of course, is the chance to meet this month’s “Hot Dish,” Tara.

Also, we have a special treat for everyone – DJ Cherry Spoon, aka Anne Szustek, aka February’s “Hot Dish,” will be spinning Minnesota music all night.  Anne has quite a collection of Twin/Tone Records releases, who put out records by just about every Mpls hit-maker from 1977 to 1994, including The Suburbs, Babes in Toyland, The Replacements and Soul Asylum.   A night of musical memories and feeling at home with fellow Minnesotans living in New York!

SATURDAY APRIL 3rd

The lovely indie Americana sounds of StarDweller this Saturday will be kicking off an exciting night at Union Pool.  Folky  North Carolinans Megafaun are in the midst of an epic tour of Europe and the US.  Brooklyn indie-folk artist Sharon Ven Etten headlines.

SATURDAY APRIL 3rd

This year, Holy Week coincides with Passover, and to commemorate this rare occurrence, burlesque performers The Schlep Sisters bring you The Burning Bush vs. The Second Coming. The Schlep Sisters feature Darlinda Just Darlinda and Minnie Tonka, who, as you might guess, hails from Minnesota!  She’s been a burlesque performer in NYC for 6 years as Minnie Tonka, a name that has such a nice ring to it.  Don’t miss this ultimate Burlesque showdown!

And on a personal note, 2 of my favorite Minnesotans will be in town for their first trip to NYC – my teenage niece and nephew.  I’ll be missing some of these fun events, but hope everyone else can get out there and enjoy them!
